Summary of the film
After a plane crash strands a capable female employee and her annoying boss on a remote island, she must use her survival skills to keep them both alive, despite their challenging relationship. (Filmaffinity)
Egyptomania narratives or motifs
A black comedy by Sam Raimi in which the cohabitation of the two protagonists gives rise to hilarious and disturbing situations. One of them includes a curious reference to ancient Egypt.
After poisoning Linda (Rachel McAdams) during dinner, Bradley (Dylan O’Brien) attempts to escape the island using a boat that he has been secretly building. When the attempt fails due to the strength of the waves, along with the boat’s poor construction and lack of structural strength, Sarah takes revenge in an unconventional way. Apparently remorseful for his actions, Bradley accepts the food Linda offers him in order to demonstrate his good nature. The meal consists of a grilled cephalopod which, when ingested, causes Bradley to become paralyzed by neurotoxins. Linda thus demonstrates her vastly superior survival skills, on which Bradley is entirely dependent, since he is an urbanite and executive with no practical knowledge whatsoever.
Bradley’s state of submission allows Linda to make it clear that she is the one in the advantageous position in the island’s hostile environment and that Bradley should therefore change his behavior. She then removes his trousers and underwear and proceeds to threaten him with castration as punishment for his behavior. At this point, Linda explains that castration was a procedure performed on Egyptian slaves in order to make them more obedient and docile. Fortunately for him, the whole episode is merely a warning, and the castration is not actually carried out.
